What Is Spacing?
Spacing, also known as distributed practice, is the practice of revisiting content over time instead of teaching it once and moving on. Rather than grouping learning into one lesson or unit, teachers deliberately give students opportunities to review and practice concepts over several days and weeks.
You might view it as the reverse of cramming. Rather than dealing with the material in one go and then being finished with it, students study it in smaller amounts over time, strengthening their memory and understanding each time they revisit it.
What does the research indicate?
Spacing is not just a useful classroom strategy; it is among the most extensively researched learning strategies in cognitive science.
A landmark study by Cepeda et al. (2006) found that:
“Distributed practice produces substantial gains in long-term retention compared with massed practice.”
In other words, students remember more, and remember it longer, when learning is spread out over time.

Similarly, Brown, Roediger, and McDaniel in “Make It Stick: The Science of Successful Learning” explain:
“Learning is deeper and more durable when it’s effortful… and when practice is spaced out, forgetting occurs, and then the act of relearning strengthens memory.”
That “desirable difficulty” matters. When students have to retrieve something they have started to forget, their brains work harder, and that effort helps strengthen neural connections.
Classroom research also backs this up: if teachers incorporate spaced review into their daily routines, students then demonstrate better retention, improved ability to transfer their knowledge, and increased confidence over time.

1. Spiral Review
Regularly revisit previously taught skills alongside new content. This keeps learning fresh and helps prevent knowledge loss.
2. Daily Warm-Ups
Start each class with a few questions from past lessons or units. This simple routine builds retrieval strength over time.
3. Cumulative Assessments
Design quizzes and tests that include both recent and older material to reinforce long-term retention.
4. Interleaving Skills
Mix different types of problems or concepts instead of grouping similar ones. This helps students tell ideas apart and apply them more flexibly.
5. Intentional Planning
Look ahead and map out when key concepts will reappear throughout the year. Even short revisits can have lasting impact.
