5 Chapter Books Series for Beginning Readers

Young readers sometimes need a little motivation to pick up a book. One way to keep your child interested in reading is to find a favorite book series. Introducing your child to a series provides a chance for him or her to fall in love with characters and explore the characters’ worlds over and over again. Here are some recommendations for chapter book series that beginning readers have fallen in love with over the years.

You’ll never believe what she’s done now! This fun series follows the misadventures of Junie B. through her kindergarten and first grade years, as she deals with her baby brother, the classmate she dislikes, and all of the silly situations she faces. If your young reader loves to laugh, Junie B. Jones is the perfect series.

A to Z Mysteries by Ron Roy

Get ready, young Sherlocks! A to Z Mysteries follow the adventures of three friends, Dink, Josh, and Ruth Rose as they sleuth through their home town of Green Lawn, Connecticut. There’s one book for each letter of the alphabet (For example: A’s book is entitled, The Absent Author), but your child will enjoy the clues, the adventure, and the search for “who-did-it” regardless of the order in which they read these books.

Magic Tree House by Mary Pope Osborne

Looking for a series full of magical adventures and history? Follow siblings Jack and Annie as they travel through time on missions given to them by a mysterious magical figure. This series also grows with your young reader’s abilities; as the series progresses, the Lexile score gradually rises to ensure your child continues reading at his or her skill level.

Judy Moody by Megan McDonald

She’s in a mood! This series follows the adventures of Judy Moody as she tries to make the best of being in third grade. The series is filled with quirky elements, like Judy’s band-aid collection, her Venus fly trap, and her pestering younger brother, Stink. She’s a main character with big ideas and strong convictions that will make children and even adults admire her.

Goosebumps by R. L. Stine

It was a dark and stormy night… for reading! R.L. Stine’s famous Goosebumps series has long been a favorite of beginning readers. While the idea of children reading horror books may frighten some parents, these books are specifically written for young readers. The main character, who changes with every book, faces strange and supernatural elements, and uses wit and imagination to escape them. Young readers often so desperately want to know how the main character will escape, that they can’t put the books in this series down!
